Books & courses assigned are expected to be paid for by the student. Do I have to have experience with music? You or your child doesn't need any experience at all. I'm teaching levels from very beginning to intermediate. I require a general interest and enthusiasm in music. That's it! Do I have to love the piano? Do I have to stick with it for years of study? No, you do not have to have a deep passion for the piano. While a passion and enthusiasm is welcomed, in fact, encouraged, a general interest in music and the piano is all I ask for. Piano is the best foundational instrument to study. You learn how to read 2 clefs, play with 2 hands simultaneously, and you learn to grasp music theory quickly. With this solid foundation, you may choose to branch off to guitar, voice, strings, brass, drums, or wind instruments. During my music studies, studying piano paid off 10-fold with the other instruments I studied later on. I didn't have to worry about studying music theory while trying to comprehend how to play the instrument. Learning music theory and a new instrument can be a daunting task. Studying piano made learning a new instrument easier. And I was always light-years ahead of beginning students who were trying to study music theory and their new instrument at once. Why yoga, dancing, acting, singing in a piano lesson? Everyone learns differently. Either we learn kinetically, aurally, or visually. I'll do anything (within reason) to get a point across. If the student can understand a concept by using singing or acting, then they'll perform the piece better on the piano. It's all about interactive creativity. This is definitely not your Grandma's piano lesson! What I've discovered about kids and yoga, they love doing it! And it helps relax the mind in preparation for playing. Or, it brings to the spirit an excellent conclusion to the lesson. It makes the lesson FUN! When we have fun, we want to learn more. I've done some fun things in my music lessons, and I like to have fun teaching as well. When singing or acting a passage, we understand how to perform the passage of music. If we dance, we understand the personality of the piece (angry, sad, happy, amusing). What are your expectations as a teacher?I have high expectations, but they give results. I do expect students to be dedicated and practice what's assigned. I teach how to practice and solid music fundamentals. I provide materials to track lesson progress & practice progress. If a student chooses not to dedicate themselves with practice, then it's not worth my time or theirs to continue lessons. Will there be recitals or music events involved? I will be hosting a recital at my house every 3-4 months (I have a Steinway Square Grand Piano from 1870). I might assign or organize a meetup to attend a couple music performances every 3 months as well. It depends on the general interest of my students.
